Oakley was started by James Jannard in 1975 out of his garage and the name "Oakley" came from his dog - an English Setter called "Oakley Anne". Jannard began selling what he called 'The Oakley Grip' out of the back of his car at motocross events and his grips were praised as they were unlike any other grips available at the time. This material is still used today to make the ear socks and nose pieces on Oakley sunglasses. In 1980, Jannard released a pair of goggles called the O-Frame which presented the 'Oakley' logo present on the strap and immediately the brand garnered positive recognition. Following on from this triumph, in 1983, Oakley began selling ski goggles and their first Oakley Sunglasses; Factory Pilot Eyeshades which were sport-oriented goggles. Then in 1985, the Oakley Frogskin, a casual sunglass style that was made in Japan bolstered Oakleys position in the eyewear industry.
