Rosario Toscano and Salma Rachid, the founders of the eyewear company, launched the brand in 2019 with a joint goal of evolving the eyewear market. Toscano alone brought around 20 years of industry experience to the brand name. Together, they decided to base Akoni's manufacturing headquarters in Japan due to the extensive amount of skilled producers and artisans available to them.
