Versace Sunglasses - The History
Versace was born on December 2, 1946, in Reggio di Calabria, Italy where he grew up immersed in design. His mother was a dressmaker and Gianni Versace worked with her after completing high school. Then in 1972, he moved to Milan, where he began freelance design work for Italian labels Genny, Callaghan and Complice. In 1978, Versace launched his own ready-to-wear womenswear collection with his brother Santo and sister Donatella. The House of Versace was always a family affair.
The name, along with the recognisable ornate ‘Medusa’ emblem, have adorned many Versace Sunglasses designs. They can be described as alluring, glamorous and classic of sexy rock ’n’ roll-style. Innovatively designed, Versace reinterpreted his fabrics to be bold, modern and powerful in color. This was displayed through his choice of colour palettes, vamp aesthetics and liquid fabrics.
Throughout his career, Versace designed for many celebrities and Royal Family members. This included the likes of Princess Diana, Elton John, Madonna and Tina Turner. Anna Wintour was quoted in The New York Times saying, Versace "was the first to realize the value of celebrity in the front row, and the value of the supermodel, and put fashion on an international media platform." Gianni Versace worked with many ‘supermodels’ such as Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford.
In 1997, Gianni Versace was shot and killed outside his home in South Beach, Florida. His sister took over the House of Versace and continues to serve as head of design, while his brother Santo became CEO.
